Our Goal

OUR GOAL

To provide a unique environment where folks who have experienced trauma can openly and safely talk. We strive to respect, validate, and learn from each other.

ACHIEVING OUR GOAL

Achieving our goal requires cooperative collaboration amongst members and staff. Members posts remain appropriate and relevant to topics. Terms of Service are clearly posted to help members maintain the dignity of the board. Members of this group are at a stage in their healing to independently regulate their own behavior, as well as keeping themselves safe while on the forums. Staff regularly monitor posts and replies to ensure the board remains a safe and comfortable environment of learning for everyone.

As a friendly and kind community, we validate each other as equally special and significant.

These forums are active and the community not too large or too small - about 400 post per day. There are many forums on different topics. The topics range in subject matter also. You are welcome to interact as you feel comfortable.

This is a safe place for members. We encourage building coping skills, learning from each other and material shared. We discourage sharing explicit memories of past abuse. We feel that processing memories be done with professionals. There are no practicing therapists on these forums. Therefore, topics that call for therapist type responses are discouraged.

Feel free to look around. Realize that, as a guest, your view of the forums is minimal. These forums are otherwise private to the public view and/or search engines.

We have literally hundreds of articles and provide workshops for everyone. Please feel free to email me anytime with questions. I am also providing a tutorial that should help with navigating our site.

The very best to you,

Webinar Group

Post by manysunshine on 3/3/2018, 6:02 am

Hi
Just wondering if any of you would be interested in a small, online DID group on the webinar program on here? Let me know by replying to this....it would be max 5 people and I would lead it....I have my Masters in Marriage and Fam T so, have experience...if there are more than 5 interested, we could either do another group as well, or if it's only 1 or 2 people, we may increase the size.

@ starbuck -- it depends when people decide. We think once we've reached at least 4 members who want to join it, we can come up with dates and times.

I am surprised more folks have not jumped on this opportunity.

Maybe, everyone doesn't understand. Ivory Garden is a nonprofit org - our purpose and goals are fundamentally to provide what is most helpful to others - not Ivory Garden - right? Other groups state the same, but are not providing -

For instance, about 5 years ago, folks asked that we have a conference - they stated what they would like - and, IG provided it and successfully. These conferences continue - and, successfully - meaning that we fulfill our purpose and folks express that they benefit.

The idea of having these groups came from us discussing what survivors most need - based on what you all tell us.

Manysunshine brought up the idea of having groups - with qualified folks leading them - so that survivors who don't have therapy or who need additional can come. We are blessed to have highly qualified folks on our forum as members.

I don't want this to become confused with 'peer supporter' type help - we had this at one time here - and, it totally blew up in our face. Mainly, because the folks doing the 'peer support' were in no way trained. We do not continue a program that is 'hurtful' - and, we keep our strict privacy guidelines intact.

I understand that there are other groups with similar purpose and goals to IG's - but, without the fundamental goal of 'helping others' and ensuring that folks remain safe - IG's TOS and privacy policy are available.

I don't know if that clarified what type 'groups' we are offering, but I am hoping so.

I know that Manysunshine is working diligently on what 'type' groups would be most beneficial. You are all welcome to add ideas here.

Post by manysunshine on 3/11/2018, 3:52 pm

Thanks Felicity. I mean if no one wants it, that’s fine. I’m willing to lead it but only if we can get it together pretty soon because I really want to help people and if other opportunities come up and there’s very little to no interest in this, I’ll help others. I know it can seem a little scary for people but it’s a choice they have to be seen (webcam) or just heard (phone). I just don’t like typing much plus I am very bad at understanding tone in typing— voice inflections are important to me, especially in a process group. So, please if you are interested let us know soon.

Can you name a tentative day and time and start date, that will work for you if you lead it, and see who can show up?
I am VERY interested, I am sure others are too. But I am also sort of sure people are wanting to know these details as a first step before committing themselves to something that may not work for them.
This forum is on Pacific time, as Felicity and I are both located in Pacific time so that would be a best way to put times.
The forum is least busy on Sat and Sun mornings and busiest on midweek days and mid-late afternoons. Hoping that could help make a decision easier to do.
I think people are interested and this is a good idea. Would be sad to see it die out because people don't know "when" it is.

We have about 4 folks interested - I saw - maybe, we could post when is a good time.

@ Starbuck that’s great!! Yes, that’s the reason I’d like to know times and dates people can be on so we can hopefully have a majority who can be at the same time. As I said, I have several set appts a week, while other appts I am able to schedule differently if needed. If you have ideas, times and dates, please post them. Also, if you have experience and credentials please let Felicity and/or us know. Thank you

Re: Webinar Group

Post by felicity on 3/23/2018, 9:23 am

This copied from a private forum - I think it relevant here:

Oh my....

I so can relate to your frustration. Your offer to provide a process group for folks was promoted on the open part of our forum - meaning that it went out on the internet. And, 139 people viewed it - that is clearly seen.

It is an amazing opportunity for anyone - imho.

The work that IG puts into helping folks has always been without agenda - and - well, we all volunteer our time and never have received any financial gain at all. Many folks are aware of this. And, are appreciative of all that we do.

That said, you have been around social media groups and have witnessed the competitive attitude as well as an obsession to sabotage anything we attempt to do. This has gone on for decades - literally - and, you know that. I am always being added to these groups. Yesterday, I ended up on a DID group - that opened several months ago and already has nearly 3,000 DID members - many who began on this forum. Someone posted about your process group - and immediately the admin wrote that 'we' (meaning IG) cannot be trusted. Okay, so how do we defend ourself - well, we can't as we know from attempts we have made in the past.

We know that other DID focused groups and conferences are not in the position that we are - we do for the purpose of HELPING - they do for the purpose of FINANCIAL GAIN and/or personal success. So, they will do or say anything to gain more people - that is how it has always been. The folks that follow them are not to blame - they believe what they say and have a very strong need to trust and to follow. And, we know that, in all cases - whether survivors are controlling and/or following - that is the nature of trauma survivors - and, we are talking about trauma survivors here. It is a re-enactment of early abusive situations. Trauma survivors also avoid and fear anything 'real' - conferences, processing groups, open discussion forums, etc., especially if they are 'told' not to trust.

Anyhow, that is what I tell myself as I watch a concerted effort out there to sabotage everything we do.

Recently, as you know, the effort to sabotage our conferences is in full-swing within the DID communities. Other groups began a rumor that we weren't having a conference this Oct - which was believed by some of our speakers - and, they decided that rather than support and speak at ours' - they would speak for another group. This was done before our last conference had even ended. By now, most survivors have decided that we won't be having one - and, as expected - will be attending the other conference - despite that conference's purpose is to make more money with the least amount of expenses - with no - and I mean, NO care for helping anyone.

Well, you do know all of that also.

So, what then? I have been dealing with this for over a decade - and, have many times nearly thrown up my hands and walked away from everything. The thought that goes through my head, "We do all of this work FOR everyone who asked us to have a conference, to create a safe forum. Why don't these folks at least support us when they hear horrible lies about us?" And, I cry that they don't 'see' what is happening out there. And, I hurt inside.

I think - and, am not sure - that I am sensitive to hearing and seeing - concentrating on a very small bit who sabotage us of a huge population who do want and need help - and are intelligent enough to avoid the drama, lies, and bs of social media groups.

We are dealing with similar again with the Anchorage conference - and, it is in full-swing right now. No one is interested, because they are being influenced by others who 'aren't going', but again - many are going under different names - actually, afraid that their 'friends' will find out. So, silly - but, okay. I am excited - it will be a wonderful conference.

But, if I don't go forward - then, I can think - well, the other groups will win and 'get rid of us' - what they want. I am tired and no longer care about them at all! But, if we give up - it is not so much that they will win, but that those who we do help, which btw, are hundreds or more folks - will lose the resources that we give - and, won't realize it until we are gone - so, we cannot punish them for following their hearts. Kind of like - they don't know what they lost till it's gone. And, once it is gone - we all know that it won't come back no matter how much they ask.

We are also survivors and are sensitive to 'rejection' - I admit that. And, I so understand what you are feeling - but, understand also that at least five ppl are very interested in these groups - they are important. We need to remember to concentrate on those who are needing what we have to offer and forget about those who are struggling with their own d*mons and fulfilling needs of others in order to feel safe within themselves. It just isn't worth trying to get others to believe and trust - they are lost in lies and deceit - and, I don't believe that they would benefit from a process group aimed at healing - because, at this time, they don't want that sort of help - right?

A lot of that is mho based on working with over 2,000 survivors in two decades.

Giving up on survivors is kind of like SU thinking. When you are hurt inside by their behavior - and, best answer - just walk away - what do you think?

Well, this was kind of a vent for me also. ty for bringing this up - I don't want anyone to start signing up for a group out of guilt - that is not why it was offered - right. But, if you have heard that we can't be trusted - ouch - that is a lie - we have been around for 2 decades and there is no evidence to support that.

Be well - and, try to concentrate on doing the process group with the folks who did sign up - okay? I am looking forward to it.

I am just seeing this post. I struggle with navigating my way around the forum. Not sure why. I’m pretty technology savvy online but for some reason have had a hard time with seeing all the posts here.

I would be interested but as said above would be dependent on day/time. I dont do early mornings or late evenings. I am in T - 2 evenings a week and in a DID Group on a 3rd day.

I like the idea of Peer Support Specialist. I am a trained Peer Support Specialist waiting to take the Certification Exam. BUT I totally agree that in this type of setting could blow up and I would NOT want to be part of that.

I think I am “following” this post so will keep eye out to updates.

Re: Webinar Group

Post by felicity on 4/1/2018, 7:50 am

I somewhat follow other groups, and it seems that one by one, they are blowing up from the inside out - I think, for many reasons - but, mainly a clear lack of respect for the groups or those leading groups - and, 'board-hopping' (as we used to call it), going from one group to the other and gossiping about members. I haven't seen that happen here.

With those sorts of environment, any group with serious discussion would be disastrous. The members of those groups mock each other & especially the admins, excusing the behavior as - 'all in fun' 'just sarcasm', etc. Can you imagine how that must make ppl feel?

I think, possibly, we should have two peers leading the groups - like one for backup - in case one can't make it. Let's talk about that - I can be 'backup' - I think that we have 5 people interested.

Now, we just need to think of a theme - or topic and how long we want it to run. We could have volunteers within the group bring up a topic and vote - or something like that. It should remain about 'coping' though - not intense personal work for anyone. And, we should decide whether we want to record - and, who for - like just the folks in the group - or for also folks outside - or not at all.

This kind of reminds me of ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics). Each week one person would be in charge of having a topic and maybe a reading to go with it. Then, the other people would talk about their experiences/thoughts etc of the topic.
But, if we have leaders, which is fine, a topic for the following week could be agreed upon. Like if we do ‘coping’ we could have topics like ‘asking for help,’ ‘grounding techniques,’. ‘What do to with intense emotions....
Just my thoughts

I’ll let Felicity explain because there are 3 separate things happening. The webinar is for all— open forum for educational purposes. The process group is for members on the forum for support and it’s not on the open forum. Then, there’s a book discussion or something that Felicity is planning for after the Alaska conference. Please if you are not sure which you are interested in, give us some time to get the Alaska conference finished and you can look for the process group info in the members part of the forum. We will pm those interested when all is cleared up.

Re: Webinar Group

Post by felicity on 4/5/2018, 1:16 pm

okay, first we use this program for webinars and such - go to meeting It is a wonderful program that we have used for about 5 years. You can click and get an idea.

Basically, we set the time and days, you register, you are emailed with a reminder and given the info on how to get to the meeting - and, options (phone, video, audio, etc). It is available to anyone in the world without charges. We can use power point as we like, we can record, and there is one or two presenters in charge of administering meetings. Attendees can chose to be on video, audio, or just use text. Attendees can participate or not - whatever the presenter decides. The sound is clear as is the video and power points. Very clear and much nicer than most of the webinars that I have attended. There is no charge for anyone - including those in other countries besides US.

Many of you have attended meetings, webinars or workshops there. We have never heard complaints - so there you go.

Manysunshine is correct. I believe that there is some confusion.

There are 3 things going on:

1) Presenting webinar(s) - much like the conference workshops are set up. CEU's would be available. The webinars would be educational, we would provide expert presenters on a topic, and they would be open to the public and published. This being provided for those who cannot attend conference and/or those who would like to learn more -

2) Workshop group - we would again be reviewing and talking about the book -
Coping with Trauma-Related Dissociation: Skills Training for Patients and Therapists (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology) 1st Edition
by Suzette Boon (Author),‎ Kathy Steele (Author),‎ Onno van der Hart Ph.D. (Author) We did this a couple of years ago - and, it took about a year to go through the entire book. I enjoyed it so much, I would like to do it again - if there is enough interest. This would be open only to active (or past) member of IGDID forum, it would never be recorded or published, but totally private.

3) Manysunshine has asked about a small 'processing group' being held regularly. This would include a small group of folks (active members from IGDID) interested in interacting on an agreed upon topic - peer led - by a qualified, experienced individual. It would be very private and members would need to agree on our terms of service regarding privacy and confidentiality.

I hope that this clarified all of this a bit. We will be pming folks to see how much interest and who would like to participate.

Again, check out the program I gave a link for and get a better idea of webinar rooms and what they offer.

As for training, I will get together with anyone interested in presenting or helping and train in the room. It is very simple to use for presenters and attendees.

Please ask questions here.

Okay, I am so busy - I am sorry - yes, Sals Pals - I know that we talked - I haven't forgotten.

Just that we haven't set anything up yet - bear with me. I am like overworked - lol- but, I love it. anyone who wants to pitch in - let us know - we appreciate everyone - you all know that.

And, you all know that I always focus on one thing at a time. When we get back from Anchorage, like one month, I will put my complete focus on starting the workbook with you all - In the meantime, you all can contact manysunshine - btw - in case you all don't know her - or who she is - she is on our board of directors, has been a member here for many years, has helped plan all of the conferences, and has attended them also - She is an intricate part of Ivory Garden.

Manysunshine, maybe do a bit of an introduction - we have many new folks as well as others who I don't think know who you are.

To clarify - the webinars will be set up similar to how we set up conference workshops - they will not be 'from' the conference. They will be educational - presented by qualified speakers - for survivors, clinicians, and supporters. All speakers at the conference focus presentation for diverse audiences. This will be no different.

I do wish that we were able to video tape the conference workshops, but I am fairly sure that won't happen, because our budget is so tight as it is. We do the best that we can.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the conference - those who are attending.

@Manysunshine Aye! I'm definitely on board. That will be 8 pm EST for me.

I"m a little confused. Felicity mentioned three things: 1) webinar(s), 2) MarySunshine's Process Group, and 3) the Book discussion.

I, too, am reasonably technologically savvy but I have trouble navigating this website for some reason :-( Does anyone know where we go to sign up for each of these three things.

Hi all
We are going to wait and PM all of you after the Alaska conference. We are just too busy right now to do the planning and then the process group at the same time as getting the conference ready. We are so sorry for the delay, we know how hard it is to wait when you really want to do something and we thank you for your patience. We will get back with you all after the Alaska conference....
